MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms and The Fab Foundation, along with the entire FAB12 planning team, are happy to announce that FAB12 is now open for registration! Our new website, http://www.fab12.fablabcon.net will provide you with all the information you need for your participation in our annual gathering, so please keep an eye on the site over the coming weeks and months as the conference details emerge. FAB12 is taking place in Shenzhen, China from August 8 – 14, 2016 at the Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel. Shenzhen China is a historically important city for manufacturing and making. Today China is embarking on a long-term program to foster innovation and technology, so the city is a perfect incubator for the digital fabrication revolution fab labs are bringing to the world.
We continue to grow— last summer at MIT we had more than 700 labs in 75 countries, today the network has approximately 1000 labs! That means you need to register as soon as possible so we’re sure to see you in Shenzhen.
For those of you new to FABX, the main conference is for users, students, lab managers, labs-to-be, and sponsors affiliated with the Fab Lab Network. This includes hands-on workshops, talks, planning meetings, project demonstrations, Fab Academy graduation, Global Fab Awards, informal opportunities to connect and fabricate, public demonstrations and, of course, fun celebrations of our network. On August 12 the Fab Symposium will take place at the Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel. It is a one-day, public event that explores the principles, applications and implications of digital fabrication. And over the weekend of August 13 – 14 there will be the public exhibition and festival.
This year our meeting will focus on Fab Lab 2.0, the ability of a fab lab to use its own digital fabrication tools to produce a fab lab and to produce the manufacturing machines of the future. Central to the meeting is the challenge to the fab community to build the first Fab Lab 2.0 in a week – no small feat, but we can do it! It’s sure to be fun and historic.
As always, the details are still emerging (and will continue to do so in the months to come!) but basic information about travel, venues, registration, etc. is now on the FAB12 site. Early birds pay $550 USD, late birds will pay $750 USD.
